Margin recovery & systemic software risk

Growth should bring more than more cost.

When software makes the business expensive to run or difficult to change, we find the underlying constraints and carry out the engineering.

We connect the two

01 / Where we help

The symptoms are visible.
The causes take investigation.

You don’t need to arrive with a technical diagnosis. Start with what has changed in the business.

01

The cost of growth

More customers. More cost. Too little margin.

Hosting, onboarding, and support grow with every customer. We trace that cost to the architecture, processing, and manual work behind it, then identify which changes are worth making.

02

The cost of change

More engineering effort. Less forward progress.

Recurring failures and fragile dependencies keep interrupting the roadmap. We investigate the causes and carry out structural work alongside the people responsible for delivery.

03

The risk you carry

Critical software. Incomplete answers.

A key person is leaving, a sale is approaching, or an important system is poorly understood. We recover the knowledge, investigate specific exposure, and make remaining risks explicit.

03 / How the work moves forward

A clear diagnosis.
And the capacity to act on it.

We connect technical findings with decisions about cost, capacity, and risk, then implement the agreed work.

Trace an operating cost to the software behind it.

01

Follow the evidence.

Start with the business symptom and examine the relevant applications, infrastructure, costs, and working practices. Distinguish what we can demonstrate from what still needs investigation.

02

Make the decision practical.

Compare feasible changes, implementation effort, operating consequences, and the cost of leaving things as they are. Separate cash savings, recovered capacity, and reduced risk.

03

Carry out the engineering.

Implement agreed changes with testing, staged rollout, and recovery arrangements. Make progress and remaining work visible while keeping the people responsible involved.

“We diagnose systems, not people.”

Your technical leader is an ally. We help the people responsible carry the work forward.

A practical place to start

Bring one problem
worth understanding.

A rising operating cost. A recurring failure. A roadmap held back by the same dependencies. We can scope an investigation around the decision you need to make.

Discuss a focused assessment

A separately commissioned assessment can give you:

  • A scoped account of the causes and supporting evidence.
  • A distinction between cash savings, recovered capacity, and risk.
  • Prioritized changes, dependencies, and an implementation outline.
  • A practical plan for who will operate and maintain the result.

Scope, access, deliverables, and fee are agreed before work begins. You can take the findings to another implementer. Already have a plan? We can start with the engineering you need.

Before we talk

A few fair
questions.

Is this only for software companies?

No. The fit is consequential software work. We help businesses that sell software and businesses that depend on applications to operate. A named cost, reliability, delivery, or knowledge problem gives us a useful starting point.

Will this undermine our CTO or engineering team?

We work alongside your technical leader and maintainers. They often already understand much of the problem. We bring dedicated engineering capacity and evidence to help the business decide what to resource. We diagnose systems, not people.

Do we have to buy an assessment first?

No. If the causes are uncertain, a separately commissioned assessment can establish a practical route forward. If you already have a plan, we review it proportionately and agree the implementation. An assessment does not commit you to awarding us the work.

Do you guarantee savings or a successful exit?

No. The outcome depends on the systems, scope, and changes justified by the evidence. We make assumptions explicit, agree how results will be evaluated, and distinguish actual savings from estimates or recovered capacity. Exit preparation addresses technical risks and evidence; it does not guarantee a transaction or valuation.

Who maintains the systems afterward?

We agree an operating arrangement before handover. You control the accounts and retain access to source, configuration, and operating knowledge. Maintenance from Aligned is optional and separately scoped, or we can agree a transition to your team or another provider.
